- As the patient's weight is distributed across the surface, air begins to leave the chambers experiencing the highest pressure and is redistributed to the lower pressure chambers
- Over time, the patient continues to immerse into the surface
- The emersion occurs when air from the entire system is released through a small valve
- As the patient rotates or leaves the surface, the system is refilled with air
- The resulting effect is a redistribution of pressure, which provides better support for the entire body and, more importantly, helps relieve pressure from high-risk zones of the body
